The Biggest Little Farm

They were advised against attempting to run a farm in harmony with nature. But despite the warnings, John and Molly Chester turned 80 hectares of barren land into productive soil.

About the film

In Los Angeles, California, food blogger Molly and nature photographer John lead metropolitan city lives. After rescuing their dog Todd from a woman who had illegally collected 200 dogs in her house, the couple promises Todd that their home will be his last.

The problem is that Todd constantly barks when the couple is at work. It gets so bad that the landlord asks them to get rid of the dog or move out. To many people’s surprise, they leave the city in favour of farm life. They choose Todd and 80 hectares of barren land one hour away from the city.

Having little knowledge of how to run a farm, they get help from Alan York. York is an authority on conventional farming. He teaches them everything he knows about farming and biodiversity. They eventually create a microcosm, and in the short term, it may seem like they can live in harmony with nature.

But the balance is fragile: the more fruit they produce, the more pests they attract. But instead of eradicating pests, the couple eventually realises that pests are necessary for the ecosystem to survive.

The Little Big Farm is a hope-inspiring documentary about how organic farming and biodiversity that can help reduce climate change.
