Topics for the oral exam (YF)

The topics for the oral exam tend to be quite broad. This is to ensure that you will have a lot to talk about on the exam.

For each example topic, we have provided a short list of questions. Some may not be relevant to what you have covered in class. Ignore the ones that are not relevant.

1. English as a global language

How to prepare to talk about this topic

Think about what you have learned about English as a global language.

  • How is English used in the profession for which you are training?

  • What vocational English have you learned?

  • How did English become a global language?

  • How is English used as a global language today?

  • How do you use English in your everyday life?

  • How does it influence us that English is used so much in popular culture (films, music, computer games, TikTok, ...)

  • How is English used as a lingua franca in Norway?

  • Have you watched any movies or read any literature that deals with this topic? (Talk about them and what you learned from them.)

  • How is English used when teens speak Norwegian? (code switching)

2. Democracy and citizenship

How to prepare to talk about this topic

Democracy and citizenship is a topic you have worked on in several different subjects at school, so do not be afraid to include information you have learned in other subjects.

Think about what you have learned about democracy and being a citizen.

  • Why is it important to have a job?

  • What have you learned about democracy in one or more English-speaking countries?

  • What have you learned about voicing your opinion? (participating in debates, participating in protests, writing letters to the editor ...)

  • What have you learned about human rights?

  • What have you learned about leaders who have worked for equality? (For example Martin Luther King Jr. in the United States, Mahatma Gandhi in India, Nelson Mandela in South Africa)

  • What have you learned about important issues in the world today? (For example climate change, plastic pollution, the energy crisis)

  • What have you learned about elections in one or more English-speaking countries?

  • Have you watched any movies or read any literature that deals with people who have to fight for their rights, work for a cause, or who take part in democracy in some way? (Talk about them and what you learned from them.)

3. Indigenous peoples in English-speaking countries

How to prepare to talk about this topic

Think about what you have learned about Indigenous peoples in countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.

  • What do you know about the culture of one or more Indigenous peoples?

  • What are typical challenges that Indigenous peoples have faced in the past?

  • How are Indigenous peoples treated in their home countries today?

  • Have you watched films or read literature about Indigenous peoples? (Talk about them and what you learned from them.)

  • Do you see any similarities between the history or culture of Indigenous peoples in English-speaking countries and the Sami people in Norway?

4. Health and life skills

How to prepare to talk about this topic

Health and life skills is a topic you have worked on in several different subjects at school, so do not be afraid to include information you have learned in other subjects.

Think about what you have learned about health and life skills.

  • Why is it important to have a job?

  • Why is Health, Safety, and Environment so important in the workplace?

  • What have you learned about challenges teenagers face?

  • Have you watched any movies or read any literature about people who have faced challenges or who are good examples of how to live life?

  • Have you watched any documentaries, or read any self-help texts or factual texts about health?

  • What have you learned about traditions and celebrations in English-speaking countries?

  • Why are traditions and celebrations important?

  • What is important to stay healthy?

  • Is there too much focus on mental health in Norwegian schools today?

  • What is a pandemic, and how can the world work together to prevent future pandemics?

  • Have you learned anything about healthcare systems in English-speaking countries?

5. Literature, films, and computer games

How to prepare to talk about the topic

Over the course of the school year, you have read short stories and poems, watched feature films, played a computer game, and perhaps you have even read a novel. You will also have studied one or more authors, and you will have worked on different types of analysis.

Start by getting an overview of the texts and authors you have worked on.

  • What have you learned from studying these texts?

  • Have any of the texts taught you anything about vocational subjects, like being a good worker or a good colleague or having a good work ethic?

  • What are the texts about?

  • What themes and messages have been important?

  • Do any of the works contain interesting information about history or society today?

  • Do any of the works teach valuable life lessons?

  • Why do we study literature, films, and computer games in English class?
