Tasks: Immigration and Multiculturalism in the United Kingdom

Research:

Task 1:

Immigration to the UK before and after the 2016 Brexit referendum:

Net immigration to the UK in 2015:

The Office for National statistics estimated that net migration to the UK was 333,000 in 2015.

The figure for EU-only net migration was 184,000.

Net migration is the difference between the number of people coming to the UK for at least a year, and those leaving.

Use the internet and find updated numbers for net immigration to the UK.
Then answer the two questions below.

  1. Has the number risen, declined, or remained stable after Brexit?

  2. Do the numbers suggest that Brexit has had an impact on immigration to the UK?


Task 2:

What are the main reasons why immigrants want to settle in the UK?

  1. Make a list of reasons why you think people want to settle in the UK.
  2. Use the internet and find out the five main reasons why people settle in the UK.
  3. Compare your list from question 1 with your answers from question 2. Point out what you got right, and what was unexpected.

Task 3:

Where do foreign-born citizens in the UK come from?

Use the internet and find out:

  1. Where do foreign-born citizens in the UK come from? Make a list of the five most common countries.

  2. Were you surprised by your findings? –Explain why/why not.

  3. Suggest reasons why people from these countries choose to settle in the UK.
