Film: Pride

Pride (2014) is a British comedy-drama, which is based on a true story. The film depicts the unlikely friendship between a small mining community in South Wales and a group of lesbians and gays in London.

It’s the summer of 1984. Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike, a strike that has already lasted for several months and is now taking its toll on the mining communities around the country. At the Gay Pride march in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decide to show their support and collect money to help the families of the striking miners. The only problem is that the union seems unwilling and embarrassed to receive their support.

Frustrated by the lack of response, they decide to ignore the union and go directly to the miners. They contact the miner’s support group in a small Welsh mining village called Onllwyn and set off in a minibus to meet their new allies and make their donations in person. This is the beginning of an extraordinary story of a surprising partnership formed by two seemingly very different communities.

But perhaps they are not so different after all …
