Tasks - Football

Countryside football

Football is very popular all over the world, not least in Norway. Strangely enough many Norwegians are more interested in English football than in Norwegian. English football is regularly shown on Norwegian television, but with Norwegian commentary. How well would you do if you were to listen to an English speaking commentator?

Those of you who play football games - like FIFA, take care listening to the English commentary. There’s a lot to learn from this. Please, don’t use the Norwegian narration.

Tasks and Activities

Picture Task

Look at the picture. Sometimes we don't seem to know where the ball is. Have football players lost track of reality as well? How would you explain why some of us devote our life to kicking at a ball?

Discussion

  • Why is English football so popular in Norway?
  • What is the best football league in the word?
  • Why/why not - is football the best sport in the world?
  • Are football players good looking?

Commentary

Watch the clip below and try to comment on what is happening by using football jargon.

Writing

You have just landed your first professional football contract. Where are you heading, what kind of player are you? What do you expect to happen?

  • Write a creative essay which you call: My first year as a football pro (suggested length (400 - 600 words)

This task may be varied with other professions and sports - like handball, car racing, cricket, acting and modeling. The main point is to write about your daydream.

Research

Use YouTube or other online video collections to find amazing football events – like great goals, impressive tricks, staggering saves etc. Make your top five list of football magic and compare lists with a fellow student.
