The last decades of the 19th century saw the British Empire at its peak. However, there were dark clouds gathering – uproars in India and Africa, the rebels in Ireland were organising, there was a new world power entering the stage, the USA, and on the continent an armaments race had started and alliances were formed. The literature of the late 19th century was, in different ways, influenced by these circumstances.
