The Bean Trees
Barbara Kingsolver was born in 1955, and grew up in rural Kentucky. She has been working as a freelance writer and author since 1985. Her work often focuses on topics such as social justice, biodiversity, and the interaction between humans, their communities and environment. The Bean Trees (1988) is her first novel.
The Bean Trees is the story of Taylor Greer, a young girl crossing the USA in her old car. She is literally speaking on the road in search of herself and her roots. All of a sudden she finds herself in charge of a Cherokee child, Turtle, and her life is changed for ever.
