Compare and Explain (Usage)
These sentences look fairly similar, but if you take a closer look, there is a slight difference. Compare the sentences and explain the difference between them.
A. There was a chance that he might attend, but he didn't promise to.
B. He made it clear that he would not attend the meeting.
A. He went so far as to admit that the tax was unfair.
B. He admitted that the tax in addition to being heavy, was also unfair.
A. He didn't mind getting up early. It was routine.
B. When he was younger he had the habit of getting up early.
A. Because I can’t get the key to go in the lock. (done in the past)
B. Because his house was broken into by burglars with a false key. (must do now)
A. You’ll get the money on January 31st.
B. You’ll get the money some time before the end of January.
A. The goods will go direct / straight from us to you.
B. The goods will be shipped immediately.
A. I don’t feel like seeing him at the moment.
B. I don’t feel like seeing him, especially now.
A. He tried to prevent it, but did not succeed.
B. He tried to prevent it from being done to no purpose.
